The mystery of the universe

Nicolas Langelier                                          Country: Canada

In this article, I will explain one of the three reasons that support the Big Bang theory and I will talk about some questions that scientists can’t answer. First, the big bang Theory is a theory of the origin of the universe. The universe spread out around 13.7 billion years ago and it was 10 times smaller than today with no defined center.

Image result for the big bangA 2013 map of the background radiation left over from the Big Bang, taken by the ESA’s Planck spacecraft, captured the oldest light in the universe. This information helps astronomers determine the age of the universe.

The first reason that we observe in 1928 with the Hubble telescope, all galaxies are moving away from us. Most of the people think that other galaxies are moving in the space-time continuum, but it’s the space-time continuum that is expanding. That means the nothingness in the universe is expanding. The expansion of the Universe imaged like the swelling of a raisin cake.

Some of the question of the universe we can’t answer. Why did it happen this way? Why did it appear? One of the questions that scientists can’t answer it’s about the universe mass.

Scientists are able to measure the visible mass of the universe. (The visible mass is the protons, the electrons, the neutrons and the neutrinos). Their scientists are able to measure the total mass of the universe with the total gravitation. The problem is the visible mass represents only 5% of the total mass. So they worry about the other 95% of the galaxy. They call it the dark matter. They don’t really know what is the dark matter but some scientist has made a theory about it. We don’t have to confuse the dark matter with black holes that are completely two different things. That could have a link with the expansion of the universe.

The Tran-Siberian Experience

By Lisa Pistocco, Italy

Have you always dreamed of travelling through Russia to the border of Mongolia? Seeing the most beautiful landscapes of Siberia? Discovering the Russian culture by meeting locals?
Here’s my story.

IMG_4628
Walking on the Baikal Lake was incredible

After my second year of applied languages, I decided to spend my last year of college in Russia. I had the opportunity to travel a lot, and moreover, to experience the Tran-Siberian Railroad.
For the ones who don’t know, let me explain to you what it is. The Tran-Siberian Railroad is a railway in Russia, extending from Moscow to Vladivostok on the Pacific. This railway was constructed from 1891 to 1916, and is now one of the most famous railways in the world.

IMG_5243
Joanna and I waiting for our train in Ekaterinburg

I decided to experience it because, while I was there, I was so impressed by all that had happened in the country. I was impressed, but also curious. Curious about Russian people’s way to live, to be, and above all curious about this huge country.

Because yes; Russia is the world’s largest nation. It borders European and Asian countries as well as the Pacific and Artic Oceans. Russia has incredible landscapes ranges from tundra and forests to subtropical beaches. How could I not be curious? Most of you know Moscow and St. Petersburg, but in my opinion, Russia is not –or not only- Moscow and St. Petersburg. Russia is all the other things that nobody knows. Russia is humanity, culture, landscapes, and mutual aid for each other.

IMG_4278
Novossibirsk, Capital of Siberia

Joanna –my favourite German friend in the whole world- and I talked about taking this trip one day. “Do you want to do the Tran-Siberian?” she asked me. My answer? “Yes of course!!” and 3 weeks later we were good to go.

Of course, it wasn’t easy to plan, to collect all the information, to book the train tickets, but we had enough motivation to go through with it.

IMG_4032

First of all, we had to find which cities we wanted to visit, because the Tran-Siberian Railroad crosses all of Russia, and stopping in every city wasn’t possible as we had only one month to do it.
We decided where we wanted to go and our decision was to the border of Mongolia; Ulan-Ude.

IMG_5086
Ulan-Ude, capital city of the Republic of Buryatia

To make this trip possible, you need to be conscious of the hard weather in Russia during the time we were going to be there. Of course, if you do it during the summer time, you’ll not have that much of a problem, but we did it during the winter period, which not everybody is able to do.

Temperatures were most of the time below -4F°. The most important to think then is to buy enough warm clothes that allow you to keep you warm!

IMG_4609
It’s really cold in Siberia, but so much fun also

Once we bought our clothes, our train tickets, and booked all the hostels, we were good to go.
Oh, I forgot something really important to take: FOOD.

Because, of course, while you are on the train –for 14h, 21h, 37h, 73h- you need food. And in the train, it’s not really possible to eat. It depends on which train, you can have the possibility to find a restaurant wagon. If there isn’t, you need to buy some dry noodles, and food that you can eat without warming and putting in the refrigerator.

34hours of train on our way to Irkutsk

It was one of the best experiences I ever had, I had the opportunity to meet amazing people and I made so many unforgettable memories. I can only recommend to you to take this trip, but also just to enjoy your life. Enjoy your life by meeting people, travelling, and be happy.

What If Obi Wan DIDN’T Leave Anakin on Mustafar

By Giulio Monaco, Belgium

Something that always made me sympathize with Obi Wan was the level of pain that he must have gone through when leaving Anakin there burning to death on the lava riverbank. This is someone who was like a little brother to him who he spent almost every day with since they met and taught him everything that he knew in respect to his master’s dying wish. Now one reason I think Obi Wan aged so terribly is because I can’t even imagine the nightmare that he must have gone through while Anakin was burning limbless screaming at him in pain.

Now what if he hadn’t left Anakin on the floor to die ? What if he walked down the lava riverbank as he slips down with each step ?

Looking at what Obi-Wan had done and what Anakin had turned into, how it wasn’t supposed to end this way. He grabbed him crying and telling him that he loved him, how he was his brother and that he wouldn’t leave him there. Anakin wanted to reach out and choke him, but knew he was only a fragment of the man that he used to be. Walking back into the ship with Padme and Anakin, they immediately were taken into a medical capsule and Padme to the delivery table. Yoda would come and see Anakin who just didn’t seem like a human anymore with a pain that he had never seen.

At this moment Obi wan and Yoda saw the Emperor step outside of his shuttle and walk straight towards the Jedi master surrounded by his troops. The battle between the clones and the Jedi start and end quickly. With the use of the force, Yoda threw the clones in the air and pulled them together breaking all their necks. Darth Sidious ignited his spare red light saber and started the battle against Obi wan, blocking all the attempts of Sidious. Obi wan gave time to Yoda to jump and kill Darth Sidious.

Coming back to the ship, Padme would be next to the bed of Anakin with their two children watching the eyes of Anakin turning blue again. He was safe now. He started to talk with difficulty to apologize for everything that he done, the only thing that he wanted was to save Padme.

Yoda starts to have new ideas about the force, the dark and light will no more be separated. It’s when we use the two with balance that the result is the best. It’s time for the Jedi to end, a new area will start now with new rules, with less chain than before and it’s only in that way that the tragedies that occurred will never be repeated.

The World Cup

Tim Stobbe, Germany

The World Cup is the biggest tournament in soccer,  full of action and struggling, and it is back after four years. The teams that qualified  to take part in this huge event do not want to n to miss this chance to show what they can do and to raise their country to the top of the Soccer World. Because this is the tournament where the best teams face each other for no other purpose than glory, for love to their countries and nothing else.

This time, the World Cup will take place in  Russia. And there are new teams joining this championship as there are others which had been doing well but didn’t qualify and also those teams which are supposed to be champions or at least have a good performance. Now I’m going to break down all those aspects. The highest records were the match 7 to 1 between Germany and Brazil in the World Coup 2014 and the 10 to 1 between Hungary and El Salvador in the World Coup 1982. The first red Card was given in 1930 in the match Peru vs Bolivia. The most goals were scored by Brazil in 2002 and Germany in 2006, 2010 and 2014. The Team that qualified less for the World Coup were New Zeland and Peru who took part only two times yet. The youngest trainer was Juan Jose Tramutola , he was 27 years old. Another very interesting fact is the numbers of sent offs during the history of the World Coup. The most have the Netherlands in 2010 with 22 in 7 matches.

Luis Felipe Scolari from Portugal is the trainer who won the most coups with Brazil and Portugal between 2002 and 2010.

The player with the most coups as a captain was Diego Maradona with 16 games. The most coups has done Gregorz Lato from Poland. He played 17 matches between 1962 and 1974.

The highest wins were Argentina vs USA 6 1 in 1930, in 1982 Hungary vs El Salvador 10 to 1 and Germany vs Brazil 7 to 1 in 2014.

The trainer with the most participating teams was the Jugoslavian Bora Milutinovic who worked with China, Mexico, Costa Rica, The United States and Nigeria.

The first World Coup was in 1930 in Uruguay. It was taking place in Uruguay from 13 July to 30 of July. Uruguay won the first title and Argentina were the runners-up. In the first World Coup there were only 13 teams and the United States were on the third place. In this World Coups the teams didn’t need to qualify anyway there were many interests from Chile, Peru and other ones but Uruguay decided which teams they wanted to have. In this group system only the first of the group came through the group stages and played in the semifinals. Since of this World Coup the sport soccer has become really important in almost all countries of the World. For the 2014 qualification all teams asked to take part in the qualification.

Here are the group results of the first World Coup

In the next World Coup this year there will be some new teams that qualified for the World Coup, for example Panama that qualified in 2018 for the World Coup for the first time. Iceland is another team that is new  in the International Coup.

The oldest trainer in a World Coup was Vicente del Bosque. He was 59 years old. and he lead the Spanish soccer team to one European Coup.

The most group stage pairings. were Argentina Nigeria in 1994, 2002, 2002, 2010 and the match France against Mexico in 1930, 1954, 1966 and 2010.

Eclipses

By Sakura Muto . Japan

The reason why I chose eclipses as a theme of this article is that there was an eclipse phenomenon here in Santa Barbara. I couldn’t watch the eclipse because of the weather, but I could see it on TV and it was very amazing.

Now I’m going to show you what an eclipse is.

There are four types of eclipses

  1.  Partial solar eclipse: it occurs when the Moon only partially obscures the Sun’s disk and casts only its penumbra on Earth.
  2.  Annular solar eclipses: it occurs when the Moon’s disk is not big enough to cover the entire disk of the Sun and the Sun’s outer edges remain visible to form a ring of fire in the sky. An annular eclipse of the Sun takes place when the Moon is near apogee, and the Moon’s antumbra falls on Earth.
  3. Total solar eclipses: it happens when the Moon completely covers the Sun and it can only take place when the Moon is near perigee, the point of the Moon’s orbit closest to Earth. You can only see a total solar eclipse if you’re in the path where the Moon casts its darkest shadow, the umbra.Sakura eclipseWhen we can watch the next total eclipse?

You can see the next on July 2, 2019 in the southern region of North  America and much of South America.

You can often see eclipses if you travel around the world.

Van Gogh Halloween 2017

By Muhamet Shala from Switzerland

It took me about three weeks to finish my blazer with the «Starry Night» on by back. It was a lot of fun painting it and wearing it at Halloween. I woke up at 6 am to finish my make up and hair.
When I arrived at school, i was amazed by the costumes and how people put a lot of effort in their Halloween costumes. Some of them were really creative, spooky and sometimes really funny. You could take pictures with your friends, eat frozen yogurt or simply dance to the music outside. While everyone was having fun, the teachers started to dance the «Thriller Dance». After that, they called the students who wanted to attend the costume competition. Roos from the Netherlands won the 1st prize, I won the 2nd place, Lisa won the 3rd place and so on. Roos was so kind and swapped her camera with my prize.

After 1 pm, we had lunch and went to State st. Some people thought I was the Statue of Liberty, which was very funny because Van Gogh is very famous in my opinion. I took so many pictures with strangers and saw the craziest costumes. For me, it was an unforgettable experience since we do not celebrate Halloween as an actual holiday as here in the United States.
