Places Where We Can Eat In Santa Barbara

by Fiona Gauthier-FRANCE

I’ve been in Santa Barbara for 4 months. I have had time to discover different places where I can eat. I’m a international student I know how hard it can be for a stranger to live in another country because we miss our home food very much, especially when you come from France. In my opinion, it’s important to present some places where people can feel at home or feel comfortable eating  something new. Also when you are a student you are looking for something not too expensive.

What is the first thing you think of when you want to eat inexpensively? Of course, the answer will be the fast food and it’s true it’s the first place where we can eat cheaply. However, nowadays we need to think about our health and, as a result, we can find place low-priced  healthy food. First of all, in California it’s known that people are more concerned about their health. As a result we can find some places where we can eat natural organic food. I can recommend you to go to “The Natural Café.” It’s a really good place to eat fresh food. There are sandwiches, salads, soups, pasta, pizza…  All these things are cooked with very good ingredients and for a really reasonable price. My favorite is the “Roasted Turkey Sandwich” with fresh turkey breast with lettuce, sprouts, tomato, red onion, on 9-grain bread with dijon mustard and garlic mayo. It costs only $7.79 and it’s served with purple chips. This is really the best meal for me because it’s a big sandwich and I don’t need anything else.

Secondly, if you need a small snack you should go to “Backyard Bowls.” You can find fresh fruit there. There are really good smoothies. They also make bowls with fruits and other natural toppings. It’s the perfect place to have a snack and be healthy. If you want to go there, I suggest you to order the “Acai” smoothies. There are acai, banana, strawberry, blueberries, and apple juice. It costs only $4.96 for the small bowl and $6.46 for the large. There are really fresh smoothies, which are  perfect for  warm weather. They also have some really good breakfasts for people who like to eat fruit and yogurt. Moreover,   the atmosphere is nice, people are really friendly. It’s a good place to spend a good time with some friends.backyard bowl

Thirdly, the last restaurant  that I can recommend to you is the “Savoy Café & Deli .” This restaurant is known to have the best fresh salad bar in town. There are many choices so it can make everybody happy. You can find fresh elements for an easy breakfast and also good meals for lunch and dinner. It’s possible to make your own sandwich and choose the ingredients that you want. You won’t be disappointed with your sandwich. They offer a variety of over 43 hot and cold dishes that can be purchased individually by weight or chosen on paired on a combo plate. Moreover this place is located in downtown Santa Barbara.savoy cafe & deli

I hope that I gave you some good ideas to eat healthy for less expensive prices. I really recommend you to try these places if you like to eat healthy. Furthermore their atmospheres are really nice and you feel comfortable eating there.

Europe in Political and Economic Trouble

by Dominik

Some people speak about the third world war! Since 2010 Europe has very serious problems. There are many different problems, for example, the Ukraine-Russia war, the problem with the refugees, the terrorism-problem and the disintegration of the European Union.

14

The problem with the refugees and terrorism are connected because of the war in Iraq and Syria. It is in these two countries where many terrorism organizations, for example Al Qaida, IS/ISIS, Boko Haram and Ansar al-Scharia, they fighting for control and causing there peaceful citizens to flee. Because of these organizations, many refugees come to Europe. 13Angela Merkel said in an interview that the refugees are welcome in Europe, but actually she spoke only for Germany. She is not the ‘’President of Europe,’’ but sometimes she thinks  that. Now she is in trouble and the countries in Europe don’t want to host the refugees. France, Austria, Poland, Slovenia, Macedonia, Hungary …… so many countries have closed their borders. Germany is now alone with this problem!

I think Europe is in grave trouble and the EU is starting to collapse from the weight of the economic burden and destabilization of the way of life.16 It will cause crises and I am afraid the problems are too great to solve. First Europe should close the borders to new refugees and hopefully our economies will recover.

Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?)

Luis Rafael Vernaza/ Ecuador

This book is a science fiction story about a dystopian society in which androids have been created to aid humanity after the world was devastated by World War III. A couple of years go by and now the androids are no longer needed, and those that resist deactivation are hunted down by the Blade Runners. The story follows Rick Deckard, an ex-Blade Runner with a semi-damaged relationship with his wife, who is called to come out of retirement to hunt down six androids that are at large, and in the process he meets a female android named Rachael who makes him question the true meaning of life, and if he himself is an android. The leader of the androids, Roy Batty, leads them to track their creator so he can extend their lifespan and become independent beings. To do so, one of the androids befriends John R. Isodore, a radioactively-damaged, intellectually slow human classified as a “special.”

During the section of the book where Deckard questions if he is an android, the only thing he is focused on is to find the answer, whether he is human or machine. This foreshadows the ending of the book, which ends with Rick going hiking to Oregon where he finds a toad and brings it back to his wife, who realizes that it’s artificial and is mad at Rick for not bringing a real animal, but he doesn’t care because he gets the answer to the question, whether something is human or not.

Both the author and the book do an amazing job at teaching the reader about the effects of war and what could happen to Earth in the aftermath. He also takes us into the depths of a damaged futuristic San Francisco and shows us the state that its inhabitants live. I think that this is a classic science fiction book for its time which is why it did so well when it was written. It has a lot of futuristic elements that exist today in the real world. If you like reading books, especially those of science fiction, then you’ll probably find this classic of that genre as one of the best you have ever read.

Healthy Nutrition Rules

By Annkristin Pfaff, Germany

To live a healthy lifestyle, you have to know the basics of a healthy nutrition. The basics consist of easy rules that you have to practice constantly to change your way of eating.

Rule #1

Cut sugar and fat out of your diet. Even if it seems impossible at first, after a few weeks you’ll get used to it and wonder why you ate food with so much sugar in them.

Rule #2

Eat a big breakfast consisting of protein and carbohydrates to boost your metabolism for the day. It can be simple, like oatmeal with fruit and coffee. You should always add vitamin rich food to your breakfast. Also, eating a big breakfast prevents you from having cravings throughout the day.

Rule #3

Feed yourself every 3 to 4 hours throughout the day to prevent hunger attacks. Again, it should include protein and vitamins to keep you satisfied.

Rule #4

Don’t drink diet soda. Research shows that people who drink diet soda as a weight loss tool actually wind up eating more food. Also, a majority of people use diet soda as the only change in their diet because they think it would make a huge difference in weight loss, but they kind of “reward” themselves by eating more sugary foods. As a result, drinking diet soda increases in cravings and eating more food because the artificial sweetener disrupts appetite control.

Rule #5

To make sure you maintain your health you should gradually increase the amount of vegetables you eat which in turn increases your intake of fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Rule #6

To boost your metabolism replace “bad fats” with “good fats” ; adding olive oil, avocados, nuts and fish to your diet will speed up your metabolism and help you to lose or to maintain your weight.

Rule #7

Treat yourself by eating one particular food that you crave from time to time. If you always focus on that one thing you’re not allowed to eat anymore, you would feel miserable. But, if you allow yourself a treat once in a while you are more likely to maintain your weight or losing weight.

Rule #8

Get at least 7 – 8 hours of sleep. If you are sleep deprived, you have higher levels of hunger when you wake up and that causes you to eat more and to give in to your cravings.

Differences between Switzerland and America

by Domenik, Switzerland

It is my first time in the United States of America. Before, I was in different countries in Europe and Africa. I had a really big culture shock when I arrived in the US because in Switzerland everything is clean and organized, but here it’s relaxed and a little bit dirty. I think, if you’d like to relax, this place would be the best place for you. The people aren’t interested in cleanliness and punctuality. I love this mentality because it isn’t stressed.

It is funny that many Americans have large cars that aren’t eco-friendly, but sometimes the same family will have a Prius, which is eco-friendly. When I see an American house with the garage, there are many times a big car and a Prius. It doesn’t make sense to me. In Europe,  the cars are smaller and more ecological.

The biggest differences are the prices between these two countries, for example, the bus is much cheaper in the US. It costs 2$ for one ride in the U.S., and in Switzerland for 4 Stations the cost is 4 Francs. The food is also much cheaper here. In McDonalds, one hamburger costs 1$ and in Switzerland a burger costs 3.50 Francs.

It is very difficult to come into the United States because you need a visa and the customs are very strict. On the plane you have to fill a sheet with questions and at customs you have to give your fingerprints, take a photo, and the man at the custom asks you questions about your trip in the States and what are you doing here. Everything is more difficult to visit this country. It’s exciting to have this experience, but I think I won’t do this for some time to come.

SOCCER UNITES AND SEPARATES PEOPLE

By Jose Ignacio Anchundia, Ecuador

In a lot of countries soccer is a very important and famous sport that everyone loves, but that does not mean that they love the same team, because in soccer league there are many and different teams with their own fans. So this means that there is a rivalry between the other teams and their fans. On the contrary, if you support the same team you are probably going to have a better relationship with another fan because you have something in common.HF

Rivalry in soccer exist all around the world and sometimes rivalry can be dangerous because there are crazy fans that exceed the limits  necessary to prove that they are better fans than the other team. So there are a lot of cases when a fan gets hurt and sometimes, worse, dead.JI

Rivalry in soccer also exists in friendships between fans of the same team and sometimes with other team fans because not everyone is a crazy fan. So they can go to the stadium together and share things like what they think about the team or the team players and have a good time because soccer is a thrilling and amazing sport.  And that’s why is we call it “The Beautiful Game.”
