Why you should visit Ystad.

If you go as south as you can in Sweden, then you will reach one of the most beautiful cities in the country; Ystad. I was incredibly lucky to have the chance of growing up here in this wonderful city, and I can’t help to miss it wherever I might go. There is everything you can imagine, from beautiful white beaches to large green forests.

Ystad is not a big city with its 30.000 inhabitants, but it is in the summertime the city truly flourishes. Tourists from all over the world come here to see its beautiful beaches and the rich culture it provides. A well-known establishment is Ystad Saltsjöbad, which is a hotel and spa located on the beach. The idea of the hotel originated in 1896 and the main building was built in 1927. The hotel has been awarded a lot of times, including “Best Luxury Hotel Spa” in 2015. On the most beautiful coast of Skåne you will find Ystad, and just by the beach you will find Ystads Saltsjöbad – a hotel-, spa- and a conference building that has existed for 117 years. Our main goal is to fill your experience with added value and hopefully to meet your expectations. A hotel, close to Malmö, Copenhagen and Österlen, full with experiences that makes your staying exciting and gives the word spa and conference a new meaning.

The city dates back to the 11th century and the town is known for becoming a busy ferry port and for its attraction to tourists. Ystad is also famous for its old houses that are well preserved thanks to the Preservation of Antiquities Association. Some of the most well-known old buildings in Ystad includes Brahehuset (The House of Brahe), Anglahuset (The Angel House) and Siriushuset (The House of Sirius). Both Brahehuset and Anglahuset are apartments today, while Siriushuset is home to Ystads Freemason Organisation. It so happens to be that I live in the former mentioned house.

It’s home for the popular fictional character Kurt Wallander written by Henning Mankell, which has been made into several movies and tv-series. For those who live here, the fact that you can see your house or someplace you regularly visit is surreal, but very cool.

Ystad is genuinely an incredible town, both for its inhabitants and for its tourists. It really brings a feeling of home and warmth, and I bet that you will love it.

USA Experience

By: Amanda Svensson- Sweden Klara Ek- Sweden Eva Selderbeek- Netherlands

The purpose of this video was to share our experience since coming to the United States. Since we been here we have been on a lot of road trips. Our first trip was to Las Vegas, where we had our first encounter with the real Las Vegas life. We drove through the strip, visited the casinos and even saw a Swedish comedian called Johan Glans.

The second trip we went on was to Los Angeles. We took the train to get there, which was quite an experience. The view from the train was spectacular, it involved a lot of the seaside and many palm trees. While we were there we went to two concerts, one of them was The 1975 and the other one was KYGO. During the day, we visited the known highlights, such as the walk of fame and the Hollywood sign.

Aside from our weekend trips, we also managed to see some of Santa Barbara’s highlights. For example, we went hiking and visited the Santa Barbara Zoo. This was our first experience with traveling through the United States.

The benefits of taking a gap year.

Eva Selderbeek, the Netherlands.

It seems to be an increasing trend; taking a year off after high school and before starting University or other higher education. Students nowadays want to explore their options before making any life changing decisions, and because of rising wealth and globalization, this is now possible. But is this a good development? Should students indeed wait longer before starting their higher education?

The main reason why most people think it is beneficial to take a gap year, is that youngsters are given the opportunity to develop themselves on a personal level, before making any life changing decisions. Because let’s be honest, who knew exactly who they were and what they wanted at the age of 18? By taking a gap year, someone may discover they have certain skills and interests they never experienced before. Traveling alone means you have to rely on yourself completely. Going into a new environment, with people you have never met before means you have to be resourceful to adjust to the situation and make contact with others. For example, 98% of students who responded to a 2015 survey from the American Gap Association reported that the time off school helped them develop as a person, and 97% said taking a gap year, “increased their maturity.”

If you decide to go to school in a different country during your gap year, this can be very beneficial to your job perspectives. This shows that you are willing to develop yourself in different ways that the usual ones, which might be appeal to future employers. It also means you have experienced multiple types of education and different cultures. Additionally, 84% of respondents of the survey from the American Gap Association said that taking a gap year helped them acquire useful career skills, and 77% said that a gap year helped them find their purpose in life.

It is also shown that youngsters who have taken a gap year, tend to perform better in their higher education. Because these people have taken some time to sort out what they really want in life, they have proven to be more motivated to do well in their chosen education. Researchers from the American Gap Association found that 90% of students were likely to return to school within a year, and 73% of survey respondents said a gap year increased their “readiness” for college.

From my own experience, I know how beneficial my gap year is to me. I’ve been in the United States for about 2 months now, and I couldn’t have imagined how much this would my personal growth and development. My self-confidence got an enormous boost, and I feel much more independent than I did back home. Being out of my safe environment made me overcome some challenges, but has already empowered me so much as a person.

As shown, taking a gap year has many benefits. due to an increase of income in Western countries, the need for youngsters to start working at an early age has decreased. Because of this, they are given the chance to take their time, explore their options and indeed maybe take a gap year. The opportunity is there, they just hve to seize it.

What’s Interesting In Nice ?

By Melanie BELLOCHIO, France

Nice is located in the South of France between Marseille, Cannes and Monaco. The weather is really nice and there are not so many building, that’s why many tourists want to visit this city. Moreover, the mountains are not so far away from the city : you can go to ski just in 1h30 by car.

1            2

There is a beautiful point of view of Nice from “la colline du chateau” or the castle hill. By elevator or by walk for the most athletic people. You can see a beautiful waterfall, walk in a park or just chillout in front of the view. This castle is also famous because it is the finish line of many sporting competitions.

3   4

The most famous street in Nice is “la promenade des anglais”. This avenue is between the pebble beach (and not a sand beach) and the old downtown. Walkers, cyclists, riders and skateboarders share the sidewalk for 7 kilometers. The downtown is very cute and safe. Most students go out in the downtown during the night by tramway. It’s common to meet their friends, to eat something in a restaurant or a fast food place and go to a bar until 3 or 4 am. I can recommend a good restaurant-bar called ” le Blast” where you can eat Mexican food and drink very good cocktails. There are many other great bars in the downtown. Sometimes, you can meet students with a costume, because in few university, there are costume partys in the bars in the downtown.
